Champ Dominick Cruz in recovery mode, eyes UFC 128’s Faber-Wineland winner

The first signs of life have emerged from Dominick Cruz‘s zombie hand.  He can now open and close it, and more importantly, make a fist.

The newly minted UFC bantamweight champion underwent surgery two weeks ago to repair a severed tendon in his left hand and anticipates a summer return to action, likely against the winner of an upcoming UFC 128 fight between former WEC champs Urijah Faber and Eddie Wineland.

The ghastly state of the hand was documented in post-surgery pics that splashed across the Web. Don’t look at them unless you’re OK with nausea.

On a positive note, Cruz got his stitches out Wednesday and now will be able to get a sweat on. The hand, meanwhile, should be back in the land of the living and able to hit things within three months.

“I’m going to say under that because I feel pretty optimistic,” he recently told MMAjunkie.com Radio.
