The long road back for Strikeforce fighter Eric Lawson

Just two years ago, Strikeforce Middleweight Eric Lawson (9-3) was coming into his own. The powerful wrestling based then 27-year-old Bay Area native was riding a 4-fight winning streak with the Strikeforce promotion, with all four wins ending via first round stoppage.

He was looking perhaps at a big fight against a Scott Smith or someone of that caliber when he injured his knee in training. The setback came  just before Strikeforce signed a deal with Showtime and by the time he had rehabbed his knee Lawson found himself back at the end of the line. He took a fight against Wayne Philips last February where he suffered another injury, this time to his elbow, along with a loss to boot.

After returning to action in the fall Lawson suffered a third injury when he cracked his rib in training, pushing his fight with Ron Keslar from October of 2010 to tonight.

Now injury free, Lawson is chomping at the bit for a chance to earn the breakout fight that he might have had back in 2009 before being bit by the injury bug. He will take a huge step toward that goal with a win tonight over Kesler.
