UFC fighter Matt “The Hammer” Hamill chows down for a good cause

Mike Johnson spent a stomach-churning 45 minutes Saturday trying to put down 5.5 pounds of breakfast food during the launch of Seymour’s Diner and Grill’s Superstar Breakfast. So was Johnson more intimated by the stack of pancakes and meat in front of him, or the guy sitting next to him, Ultimate Fighting Championship Matt “The Hammer” Hamill?

“I’m just going to keep eating for the 45 minutes,” Johnson said of the challenge. “This is my first competition. I’m just going to eat whatever I can.”

Hamill, Johnson and five other challengers competed in the restaurant’s inaugural challenge – to eat four pancakes, three eggs, a slab of ham, bacon, sausage, strawberries and cream and a plate of home fries in 45 minutes. Donations collected Saturday benefited Hospice & Palliative Care in New Hartford. By about noon, the event already had raised about $1,200, said diner owner Burt Seymour shortly after the competition began.

For Hamill, who trains out of Utica, this was his first eating competition.

“It’s a great honor to get invited to this,” Hamill said. “I’ll do anything I can for a benefit or a charity that means so much to the community.”

The fighter joked he may have to shed a few pounds before stepping back in the octagon again. He’s scheduled to fight Pennsylvania-native Phil Davis in April at UFC 129 in Toronto.

  1. Eating 5.5 pounds of food would make me throw up. I don’t understand how anyone can eat so much at one sitting and not get deathly ill.

  2. I agree, that is just way to much food.
