UFC Brings The Goods On Super Bowl Weekend

The UFC has presented an event on the Saturday before the NFL’s Super Bowl every year since 2004. The idea behind the strategy was to take advantage of the bustling Las Vegas gambling community present in the city during the biggest sports event of the year. The UFC has attempted through the years to put together Super Bowl-sized events to take advantage of the unofficial American holiday but while some of the events have been home runs, others have not exactly hit the mark.

The first highly successful Super Bowl weekend event was in 2006. UFC 57 featured the trilogy bout between light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell and former champion Randy Couture. The second bout between the two Hall of Famer’s did the best buy rate in UFC history up to that point coming off the debut of The Ultimate Fighter with Liddell and Couture as coaches. This bout, a mere nine months later, did even better scoring over 400,000 buys, breaking the record 280,000 buys for the previous fight.
