Bill for Mixed Martial Arts Contests Advances in WV Legislature

By The Associated Press

West Virginia would host mixed martial arts events under a measure advancing in the Legislature. The House of Delegates voted 55-37 Friday to send the Senate a measure that would permit these fight contests.

The sport combines elements of karate, judo, jujitsu and kickboxing. Supporters say most other states already allow these fights, and that West Virginia is missing out.

But opponents cite the level of violence. They also allege that supporters have tried to sneak the measure through the Legislature.

The martial arts provision is part of a bill addressing the state Athletic Commission. The legislation would have the Lottery Commission provide office space and staff and legal support to the Athletic Commission.

Delegates defeated an attempt to derail the measure Thursday, 38-60.
