W.Va. House to vote on allowing mixed martial arts

By The Associated Press

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) – West Virginia would host mixed martial arts events under a measure up for a vote in the Legislature.

The House of Delegates is considering a bill Friday that would permit these fight contests.

The sport combines elements of karate, judo, jujitsu and kickboxing. Supporters say most other states already allow these fights, and that West Virginia is missing out.

But opponents cite the level of violence. They also allege that supporters have tried to sneak the bill through the Legislature.

The House Government Organization Committee endorsed the bill earlier this week. But the chamber’s Finance Committee was also supposed to review it but it instead went to the full House for a vote.

Delegates defeated an attempt to derail the measure Thursday, 38-60.
