Floyd Mayweather Jr. Misses Court

By Justin Tate

Floyd Mayweather Jr. did not show up for a recent court date this past Thursday, according to the Las Vegas Sun. His attorney, Karen Winckler, spoke to Judge Janiece Marshall on his behalf. A new court date for the misdemeanor battery charge stemming from poking a security guard in the face was approved for April 25, 2011.

The misdemeanor battery charge is rooted in an issue in which a security guard fined Mayweather for parking violations in front of his Las Vegas home. Mayweather grew angry with the security guard and poked him in the face repeatedly. The charge carries a potential six months of prison and $1,000 in fines, if convicted.

Mayweather has a trial set to start March 10, 2011 after previously being delayed from the initial January 24, 2011 date. The charges of domestic battery and harassment, grand larceny and felony coercion arise from a September 9, 2010 incident with his ex-girlfriend, Josie Harris. Harris accuses Mayweather of physically assaulting her and then threatening their two biological sons with physical harm as well if they “went to the police.” If convicted on all charges, he could face a maximum of 34 years in prison.

Many hope for Mayweather to continue to progress through court smoothly so negotiations for a megafight with eight-weight world champion Manny Pacquiao can begin for the third and hopefully final time. The two have come together only to split apart as a result of various disagreements, the most notable of those being the cut-off dates for randomized drug testing before the fight.
