Paul Kelly won’t be waiting long for new MMA home

By Fighters Only

No sooner was Paul Kelly released from his UFC contract than offers came in from several promotions expressing an interest in signing him up. The Team Kaobon fighter has been contacted by promotions in the US, Canada and Europe tabling deals of varying lengths.

A source close to the Liverpool lightweight declined to “name names at this stage” as negotiations are only in their embryonic stages, but said all the promotions that have been in contact “have live-broadcast television deals”.

One promotion known to be interested is Canadian outfit MFC (Maximum Fighting Championship). Mark Pavelich, owner and promoter, told TapouT Radio that he is very interested in bringing Kelly over to Canada for a fight. MFC has a number of former UFC athletes on its books and recently re-signed its former lightweight champion Antonio McKee when he was released from the UFC after one fight.

Kelly was released from the UFC after losing to Donald Cerrone in a fight that aired on the UFC 126 Spike TV undercard broadcast. The loss put Kelly 5-4 in the UFC and the fight was not without controversy as Kelly was accused of attempting a sucker punch at the start. But sources at the UFC told Fighters Only last week that Kelly’s release was due to an overstocked lightweight division which currently has 60 fighters and needs to be cut to around 30.
