Melvin Manhoef was offered UFC spot in 2007

Melvin Manhoef appeared on TapouT Radio last night, during which he talked about his career to date and, among other things, told the hosts that he had never been offered a contract with the UFC.

But the hard-hitting middleweight WAS offered a deal with the UFC in 2007, prior to the company’s re-entry to the UK market with UFC 70.

A key UFC source told Fighters Only that the offer was extended but negotiations fizzled out because of “unrealistic” financial expectations on the part of one of Manhoef’s Dutch management personnel.

That person, a leading promoter in the Netherlands kickboxing scene, wanted more for Manhoef’s fights than the UFC was willing to pay.

In the UFC’s eyes, Manhoef was an exciting stand-up fighter who would struggle to cope with the grapplers of the middleweight division and would never find himself in title contention.
