Can Dan Henderson Be a Champion at 40?

By Adam Wells

Dan Henderson has done many things in his MMA career. He is a former Pride Welterweight and Middleweight champion. He has beaten some of the best fighters of this generation including Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Vitor Belfort and Wanderlei Silva. He has 26 career victories from five different fighting organizations.

Now, at 40 years old, Hendo has a chance to win his first Strikeforce championship when he takes on Rafael Cavalcante for the Light Heavyweight Championship this Saturday night.

This fight is difficult to forecast. On the one hand, Henderson has such great power and he is so intense in the ring. He has one of the best chins in the history of mixed martial arts. At the same time, he is 40 years old and his cardio is not what it once was. He can punch himself out very early on in this fight, giving Feijao the advantage.

Also, Feijao has great striking and power. But where he has the advantage over Henderson is in the ground game. He can control Hendo on the ground and lock him into submissions. He is 10 years younger and will use that to his advantage in this fight.

Feijao is going to take this fight because I don’t see Henderson being able to knock him out in the first round, and that will be the end of him. I won’t go so far as to say that Henderson will be knocked out because he never has been, but Feijao will get the victory – second round submission.
