Counterpunch: Strikeforce “Feijao vs. Henderson”

By Bryan Henderson

The heavyweight grand prix has been the focus of Strikeforce lately, but let’s not forget that the promotion has other divisions that feature prominent fighters and title belts. This Saturday, the light heavyweights and the ladies take center stage when Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante defends his 205-pound crown against UFC and Pride veteran Dan Henderson and Marloes Coenen puts her women’s welterweight title on the line against late replacement Liz Carmouche.

The light heavyweight clash will mark Henderson’s second championship outing in only three fights under the Strikeforce banner. His first shot at gold resulted in a losing effort in a disappointing performance against Jake Shields in the middleweight division. Now Henderson hopes to fight to a better outcome when he steps into the cage against Cavalcante, who will be making his first defense of the title he snagged from Muhammed Lawal in August of 2010.

Meanwhile, Marloes Coenen makes his first defense of the title she captured from Sarah Kaufman in October of last year. Originally set to face Miesha Tate, she now must contend with late replacement Liz Carmouche. Carmouche doesn’t have the experience of the injured Tate, but she is undefeated through five professional bouts and now has her eyes set on scoring the upset to capture the 135-pound women’s title.

The main card will also feature a middleweight battle between Tim Kennedy and Melvin Manhoef, plus a lightweight scrap between Billy Evangelista and Jorge Masvidal. All of the action goes down at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. The main card will air live on Showtime beginning at 10 p.m. ET.
