Mark Pavelich: Canada’s king of MMA

By Chris Doucette, Toronto Sun

You’d think the owner of any mixed martial arts organization north of the border would be honoured to be thought of as the Canadian Dana White. But Mark Pavelich isn’t just any MMA company owner.

I sat down recently with the cocky founder and president of Maximum Fighting Championship, a Canadian-based MMA organization, and he was taken aback by the comparison.

“I’m way better looking than he is,” the MFC boss said with a grin. “He has way more money than I do, but I have way more charisma than he does.”

Not bad for a guy who claims not to be arrogant. Pavelich may prefer not to be compared to the Ultimate Fighting Championship president, he also wasn’t offended.

“He’s the Godfather of MMA,” Pavelich freely admitted of his UFC counterpart.

But with all the press the UFC has received recently, Pavelich wants to ensure fans know they have another option.

Yes, he’s got a great product and he’s the superpower of MMA, but there is a different brand of MMA out there and it’s called Maximum Fighting Championship,” he said. “And we’re not just some sort of farm team, we’re the highest level in this country.”

While he spoke respectfully enough of the UFC president, there was also a hint of disdain with each mention of Dana White, who he refers to simply as D.W.

Injured knee forces Dennis Hallman out at UFC Fight Night 24

By John Morgan

Longtime MMA veteran Dennis Hallman (42-13-2 MMA, 3-4 UFC) has been forced to withdraw from March’s UFC Fight Night 24 event. ( today learned from sources close to the event that knee injury suffered in training has forced Hallman to bow out of a planned matchup with T.J. Waldburger (13-5 MMA, 1-0 UFC).

Hallman’s replacement foe has not yet been determined.

UFC Fight Night 24 takes place March 26 at KeyArena in Seattle and airs live on Spike TV. A light-heavyweight tilt between Phil Davis and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira headlines the card.

A Washington native, “Superman” had been on a bit of a tear inside the octagon. He sent Karo Parisyan out of the organization with a first-round TKO victory at UFC 123 this past November and did the same to Ben Saunders after a decision win at UFC 117 earlier in the year. Prior to the wins, he re-signed with the promotion in late 2009 and was well on his way to a points with over John Howard before being caught with a punch that put him out at The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale.

Gegard Mousasi vs. Mike Kyle set for Strikeforce on April 9th in San Diego

By George C Mathews

A light heavyweight showdown between Gegard Mousasi (#10 LHW) and Mike Kyle is set for Strikeforce’s April 9th event from San Diego, California.

Mousasi, who is currently riding a two fight win streak, last saw action at DREAM 16, where he submitted Tatsuya Mizuno by rear naked choke in the first round. Considered by many to be one of MMA’s top light heavyweights, Mousasi holds notable victories over Hector Lombard (#8 MW), Evangalista “Cyborg” Santos, Denis Kang, Melvin Manhoef, Renato “Babalu” Sobral, and Strikeforce middleweight champion, Ronaldo “Jacare” DeSouza (#5 MW)

Mike Kyle last fought at Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Babalu, when he stepped in for an injured Valentijn Overeem to face Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva (#8 HW) in a heavyweight match up. Despite the size disadvantage, Kyle nearly scored the upset, as he knocked Silva down with a right hand during round one, but was unable to get the finish. Silva was able to battle back and score a TKO in the second round, although Kyle earned a lot of respect for his showing against one of MMA’s top heavyweights.

Strikeforce San Diego: Diaz vs. Daley takes place April 9th, and features a championship doubleheader, as Nick Diaz will defend his welterweight title against Paul “Semtex” Daley, while teammate Gilbert Melendez will defend his lightweight title against Tatsuya Kawajiri.

Inside the Arnold Classic with Duane Ludwig and MMA Legend Don Frye

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Every year during the first weekend of March, the Arnold Classic comes to Columbus bringing with it nearly 200,000 nutrition and supplement enthusiasts. Over the past few years the sport of mixed martial arts has found a home amongst the madness and with the UFC vacating this year, Strikeforce saw the perfect opportunity to pounce. The San Jose based promotion lined up a double title shot billing with one of the organization’s biggest stars, Dan Henderson, carrying the shoulder load. With that being said it is a weekend jam packed with activities and while Strikeforce will have their time on Saturday night, Friday afternoon is all Arnold.

While I am still one of the newer staff members at Bloody Elbow, occasionally Kid Nate will put me on mobile assignment. Much like my stay in Vegas for UFC 125, Columbus has been action packed with adventure and today I became one of the masses that took to the Columbus Convention Center to take part in the Arnold Classic Expo. By noon the place was packed and the muscle bound and bronzed moved from table to table in search of this year’s newest breakthroughs. Hoping to blend in the best I could I filed into line when amidst the creatine and nitric oxide pump inducers I came to a natural booth that was featuring a glucosamine product. For those unfamiliar with glucosamine it is used to promote lubrication in the joints and prevent inflation. Imagine my surprise when at this natural product stand I ran smack into UFC veteran Duane “Bang” Ludwig and MMA pioneer and everybody’s favorite American Don “The Predator” Frye. After a brief exchange of pleasantries the fighters shared their opinions on the spectacle around them.
